Full semster for project work!!!

You read it right, a full semester can be used for project work. That is the 8th semester. This is not for everyone though. A notice was put up yesterday according to which current second years can take up one extra open elective out of the displayed ten and pursue it for the next semester. This will continue for the all the semesters till 7th. Classes for these will be from 5.30 to 7.00 twice a week and all are 3 credit papers. So the 8th semester can be taken off completely for project work! SASTRA is becoming more of BITS these days... :-)

Chith drenched in Sauce!!!

Yesterday Chith Vihar was completely drenched in Sauce! That's right, Sauce 08! Sauce which expands as Sastra's Artistic Union of Computer Engineers is a cultural fest organised completely by the ACE (Association of Computer Engineers) for CSE department. With a good amount of publicity with loads of posters, tee shirts,  wadio and a large number of events, Sauce 08 was completely filled with fun as both students and staff members participated in all the events together. A variety of events right from dance, photography, arts events, antakshari and tamil debate. On the whole, the event was a humongus success. The organizers have promised to come back with a bigger Sauce 09 for all the departments.

Carpe and Colosseum over now SFW

Hi folks!
Its been really long since we posted in Angular view. Anyways, we are back now. Last weekend was amazing in SASTRA with Carpediem 08! We had loads of participants and loads of fun. The interesting thing was during Carpe, we had our intra college sports meet 'Colosseum'. Many teams from other colleges came, participated and won many prizes. I was in the videography team, so I got a glimpse of almost every event in both Carpe and Colo. Two new volleyball courts with complete fencing and flood lights were laid and the football ground was levelled for Colo. As for Carpe, the two star shows Super Singer finals and Reflections had something special this time despite the fact that the audis were completely overflowing giving the crowd control a tough time. This time in super singer, the winner was decided based on the votes by the audience! As for dance, due to the amazing crowd, it was streamed live in Nirmaan audi! With the weekend ending in a sensational way, it was not all for the students of SASTRA. Another sizzler has come up. The Software Freedom Week. GLOSS celebrates the entire week with free and open source softwares. Everyday sessions are held in TIFAC and various installation points have been put up. Overall, it is a very entertaining and informative 10 days for the students.

Power Cuts!!!

As you already know, because of the frequent and unscheduled power-cuts in the state, many problems arise. One among them is the lab sessions getting affected in our coll. So the working days were changed and this news also hit the newspapers. Due to the power-cuts, even water availability has come. The college has 5 diesel generators using which power is generated and is circulated among the various places of the college. Amidst these a three day holiday is just around the corner for Ganesh Chaturthi. Because of the power and water shortage, the college has announced these three days as an open permission despite the fact that exams start on 8th. Many students have planned to go wherever they can to get some water and electricity! Hope the power crisis ends soon.

Exam and Carpe Dates Changed

Also, Carpediem has been postponed to September 12, 13 and 14 along with Colosseum. Rumours say that even these dates for Carpe may be changed. Meanwhile, the TShirts for Carpe have arrived and we can expect them to be on sale anytime soon.

Change in Working Days

Due to the power shortage across the state power cuts are scheduled everywhere and Tuesday and Thursday are the slots of the week for our college area :-) Because of this many lab classes are affected in the University. So for the next three weeks starting from today Tuesdays and Thursdays will be holidays and Saturdays and Sundays will function with the corresponding time tables. Atleast now the students can work in the labs peacefully without power cuts :-P

Telugu Lits!!!!

So after the English, Hindi n tamil lits now the telugu people of SASTRA have started it all. the new telugu lits was inagurated recently.. it has many activities scheduled like quiz,dramatics,debate,etc.. posters were put around the campus sayin FIRST TIME IN SASTRA and some stuff in telugu n abt the inagural etc..it was started by some fourth years and huge crowd gathered for the inagural session.they are planning to make it to kuruksastra too..
so hope the club has a very smooth functioning and follow the tag which says ragging strictly prohibited :p...
so all the very best.

Here they are!!!

It's that time of the year when major companies like IBM, Sun, Microsoft, GOOGLE etc. announce student contests. With the craze for the certificates offered by these IT majors students have started to form teams for the contests. The first in the line is 'The Great Mind Challenge' by IBM. With blue coloured posters and a high traffic site, TGMC is a hit this year with more number of participants and better scenarios. It focusses on many web technologies like XML, Ajax, DB2 etc. Many discussions and special seminars are arranged everywhere in the campus for this. Also many of the two million clubs in the college proclaim to teach the students some of the technologies which are to be used in TGMC this year. Interstingly many second years are also trying to compete for the gold.  The next up is 'Code for Freedom' from Sun Microsystems. It started on the I-Day and runs on till April 2009. Like TGMC, many Sastrites have started forming teams for Code for Freedom also. Only time can tell how many winners come out from our university. All the best for every participant!!!

Carpe' diem, the intra college cul fest is to be held on Aug 22, 23 and 24 and the preparations for it has started already with the college walls being fully covered by green Carpe posters and the list of various events. The registrations for various events will be starting from the coming Monday. An orientation for the first years for the fest was done recently in Vidyut audi. The audi was so full that we can hardly find a place to stand!!! It was a combined orientation for Daksh and Carpe and the Daksh 09 website was also launched during the event. All the best to all the participants of Carpe.

A FEMALE INMATE IN THE MEGA HOSTEL!!!

We were near the water cooler in the ground floor at around 10:30 pm when suddenly there was a commotion nearby. Voices that sounded "Hey guys, come out we have somebody here!" were loud and clear! We rushed up to see what the hue was all about. When we went there, we froze to the ground seeing what it was all about!! And lo! We could see a shivering body with fear and insecurity written all over her face. This was the very same fear that one would have if one got caught in a place which was drastically alien. All the guys surrounded the place within a matter of minutes with all devilish smiles which reflected the evil in their minds. The pitiable condition worsened and the fear that gripped those shivering legs made her make a desperate attempt to escape from the place but only to find that all efforts were in vain and there was no way out. The security was no where in vicinity and neither was the warden. The guys went about their business. The very reason for their presence at the scene was about to be satisfied! But all that fear and desperation in that small face reached out to the hearts of many. Those lame legs tried its level best to make a dash for the doorway. But all that it could do was, make her limp pathetically. All our good hearts prayed for her very survival and escape. As an answer to all our prayers, the wings opened up and the peahen started flying!!! But she was so badly wounded that she didn't have the needed energy to fly. Finally the security was summoned. He came to her rescue.. approached her slowly and lifted the shivering bird tenderly and placed her in the courtyard where she could be safe. Let us all bring out the true humanity in us and protect the peahen, proving that men always have a respect for womankind!!

  Long live compassion!!

This incident was witnessed and blogged by Ashwath, Abilash and Harish.

New Hostels and the Mess Meet

On top of the Mega and AV mess, a new boys hostel is coming up. Rooms for some 30 AIEEE first years have already been allotted in these SPS styled 4 in 1 room hostel. Hostels on top of the mess is a good idea. It clearly shows that we have occupied all the space that is available for SASTRA and we seek more. Rumours say that the college has booked all the rooms in all the private hostels around the college for the next one year. Also, there is one more hostel coming up for boys behind RLV. Amidst all these construction works, the mess meet was held recently and it seems that many decisions regarding the caterers were taken and also a few changes in the permissions for girls. A new menu has been formed (well, its actually a modified verison of the existing one) for the Mega mess and it will be in practice from 18th August 2008. That's it for now guys! Ba Bye!!

Accident near GNV

VRecently, near GNV, an ambassador car and SASTRA buses collided. No one was injured badly and the issue was resolved amicably. However, the car is still kept in the college premisis. Here are some pics of the car. Sorry about the orientation of the pics, they were taken and uploaded in a hurry. :-)

Popups Is Back!!!

Yep! The good old Popups is back!!! And that too with a bang!!! Yesterday, Popups was inaugrated by its team Harshas, Amarnath, Vaishnavi, Vivekanand, Komal, Sandhya, Ashwath, Harish and yours truly :-). The crowd was amazing. TIFAC Core Conference Hall couldn't accomodate us, a strength of more than 200!!! People were sitting everywhere, on the usual seats, some 25 extra chairs, the stairs in the middle, steps to the dias, the dias, on the chief guest area both sitting and standing, standing at the back and still people were coming! The session was a complete entertainer with both the Harshas for both the sessions (one for ITC groups and the other for the rest of the groups). The usual routine of distributing registration forms and selecting the class representatives was done. Even I had a chance to go to the stage and entertain the crowd for some minutes by telling about my experience in Popups last year. We even had some people to sing on the stage. After the session was over seeing the crowd sitting in their seats not willing to move and demanding for more was a sight which will be remembered by all of us forever. Then the first years approached us everywhere till we returned to the hostels addressing us as sir (makes me feel like I m a senior when they do that :-)) complimenting us and asking for help. The day was simply sensational for everyone.

Its Happening at more places in SASTRA!!!

First it started with the students now its spreading all over SASTRA. Here are few interesting events that are happening in the college.

1. Going Green

Recently a good number of these bicycles were spotted in Chith Vihar. These are 12 fold, yellow SASTRA University labelled cycles are to be given to the staff members of the university for ease of movement between the departments. These cycles are manufactured in China (atleast this is what the boxes in which they come say :-)) and they have a very good shock absorber with a rear drum break! Now, it may be funny to imagine our staff roaming around the college in these machines but its actually a very good idea by the dean. Three cheers to the green revolution of SASTRA!!!

2. Trial Week in the Mess
The Mega Hostel mess has started a trial week this time. In this week, they are trying out new dishes for breakfast, lunch, evening snack and dinner. Some are good and some are not so good. Lets wait and see what the end result of these experiments are. After all, lab rats have no choice but, wait. :-)

3. Wifi in Mega Hostel
Works for creating new access points in the third floor of Mega Hostel were started on 25th and are nearing completion. The work is being done pretty fast and already one half of the floor is wifi enabled.

Hearty thanks to the administration of SASTRA and all the others who make such things happen in our university!!!

It's Happening!!!

These days every time I pass by the hostel warden's table, I see atleast two or three courier parcels containing Ubuntu or OpenSolaris of Kubuntu dvds. I can even find people talking about opensource technologies and other technical and non technical issues about opensource products. I found some computers on the LAN too with open source operating systems. It's hard to believe but its really happening in SASTRA. Some people can say this is all because of GLOSS while some others may say that its because the students are becoming knowledge hungry. I do not wish to find a reason for this but opensource is taking over everywhere in the world and this shift will have a very positive impact on the students. Now the companies coming for campus placements can expect better quality students and the students too can expect better companies. The management is also helping the students to move into opensource by building a new lab for opensource in Chith Vihar which is sponsored by Cognizant. Hats off to the management of SASTRA for coming up with such wonderful facilities and the students for their thirst for more knowledge!!!

Drought Hits Mega Hostel!!!

Well, here the drought is power . Once there was a time last semester when an awareness program started in SASTRA to make the students save power. Today, the once power hungry, Sastrites are now power starving. There are frequent power cuts in the place because of the govt's amendments to save power. Also, it has been announced that every Tuesday power will be shut down in our coll area from 2 to 6 pm. That's a full four hour shut down! Besides this scheduled shutdown, we have many frequent power cuts also. Today, power went off in Mega Hostel for 3 more hours after the scheduled power cut. This happened only in Mega Hostel. Also, wifi becomes unavailable very often these days in Mega Hostel which doesn't have even a single access point in the third floor. Thanks to the combined effect of a power cut and wifi failure in Mega Hostel, the college radio, 7cube was stopped by 10.30. This is an hour before the usual time. Mega hostel has one more problem. Water. There are frequent water supply shortages. So people find it difficult for the doing the daily essentials without water. The worse part of all of these is, there is not even a water cooler in the second and third floor of a hostel that is functioning for the past year. We have been promised water coolers but there is not even a single trace of them. So, the Mega hostel inmates are virtually leading a life in the hostel without power or water or wifi like cave men. Hope the administration does something soon about this.

7 CUBE PREMIERS "THE DEPARTED"

It's good news for movie fans in SASTRA. Oscar winner "THE DEPARTED" is being screened in NIRMAN VIHAR auditorium today(13th july) on 1:30pm. It is a very good initiative done by our Wadio 7cube. And already many have gone to see the movie. Hope it continues...........

Full portions for third Mid-sem

Today there was a circular reading that the third Mid-sem exam would have full portions so that it would be rehearsal for the final semester exams and it is compulsory to attend all the three mid-sem exams this time. This is the most annoying circular.!!!How come full portion can be covered in just a 50 marks paper....Would the three days time would be sufficient for preparations.Lots of questions in students mind and no one has the answer.
What is happenning to SASTRA?????

Freshers at SASTRA

On 2nd of July, our campus was filled with people.Reason:First day for freshers in SASTRA. It was nice to see them all and it reminded the first day in everyone. The number of other state students were restricted by introducing All India quota and Trichy students were given a 10% of total seats this year. And ANTI-RAGGING notices have been put up in all departments with more strict punishments. So,lets see what happens this time......

No.. This crowd aint for the exam results...!

That's right this crowd ain't for seeing the exam results. This is for paying the semester fees, hostel fees and the mess bill. All three in one! It seems that you can pay the hostel fees only if you have cleared the mess bill of last May and June if you stayed here and also you can't use the drop box for paying the hostel fees. The hostel and tuition fee has to be paid within this Saturday. So, people have started to bunk many sessions of classes and are standing in the que. Today evening, the officials issued tokens to the students for paying the fees and it seems that people without the token can't pay! The crowd is too much for the people to just pass through the place and is becoming a nuisance. It's time the SASTRA people realize this problem and find a better alternative for paying the fees. Asking for an online payment facility is too much but then they should atleast ease the process by extending the deadline for paying the fees and also the closing and opening time of the counters for these few days.

Here we go again!! :-)

The classes have started again (finally!). The hostel registrations are over and people have occupied their alloted rooms in the hostels. It seems that shifting rooms is not very easy this time. Also, Mega hostel or new hostel or Kamadhenu as you call it has started to function fully with all the rooms getting occupied. This time there are quite a few interesting things happening. The first is, changing of 2 in 1s to 3 in 1s with bunk beds in this hostel. Second is there is still no access point setup in the third floor. When I asked the TIFAC CORE guys about this, they said that setting up of access points for the third floor will be done along with the new girls hostel Anasuya. Lets hope it is done quickly. Another intersting thing to note this year is more second years are in AV than the previous years with some people shifting from AV to Mega. That's it for now guys. Just a small blog. Catch ya l8r!

e-ragging

angular view is back... yeah... i hate to give news about sastra now that i'm out... four years of freaking out and we cant find anybody to take this legacy forward... juniors... jaago... yeah wake up to the all new angular view...

han to mere pyare saastraiites... you would be surprised to know how many "cool" (hey, i just checked out, " " means that you are saying something with sarcasm...!!! ) personalities are now in sastra... one of them is here... in the fast paced new age of internet and wifi (this is not the same as internet, ask sastraiites and they'll tell you what they use it for, wadio, match telecast, TV, LAN etc... but they just cant use it for internet, y?, i guess its "not allowed"...), we seniors have decided to take the rituals of ragging to another level... yes this is e-ragging... this pic was clicked outside the sacred canteen when we were still ther, that makes this fellow a second year... and i promised him he'll be sorry for it... now y would i do such a thing...
1. i'm a senior
2. i dont have a better physique
3. i dont have anything better to do...
4. he "disrespected" the holy canteen... what do u want me to do... nothing...?

dude... this doesn suit you AT ALL... i know you dont give a damn about the management, neither do i, but for gods sake let ther be some common sense prevail in the world of fashion... n u look like a girl... some editing on this n you would win the miss sastra crown, which has not been won by anybody since 1908...

cheers to sastra "culture"

PS: his name is "BHADRU"... muahahahahahahaha

Fresh View For Angular View!!!

There is nothing in this world that does not change. You, me, the slow wifi of SASTRA and also the looks of this blog :-). PJ and I were discussing about changing the theme for Angular View to make it look fresh and add some cool features to it. So we started about roaming around the internet trying to find some good theme for our blog. During this process we came across many cool themes across many different websites. We decided to go for a 3 column layout for the blog as it looks more professional, neat and also gives us more space to put things. With a bit of CSS editing the three column layout was created. PJ had to consult some she(s) to settle with the design as he belived she(s) had a good sense of design (whatever!). Finally after some hard(rather boring)work in editing CSS, this design was created. Hope you guys like the new design. Since we came across so many cool themes we thought we can share some of the sites we searched for here so that you can use them for your blog.

Lets us know what you think of the new theme. Bye for now!

The Dears Departed

Today is a very special day for everyone at SASTRA. Not in a very happy sense but today is the day our beloved fourth years left the college and returned to their homes to start their professional lives. Many people cried, some were excited about their future but all of them were sad very sad. The man who started this blog, Prasoon Joshi - PJ as we call him left the college too. He is the a very good person who had contacts will all the year students. He was very much excited about his future in Wipro but then missed this place a lot. We guys spent some time with him. The I Years of Popups presented their hero their inspiration a tee shirt signed by everyone which he held out proudly and was deeply touched with. While he was leaving he told us "When I came to the college only 5 of my family people came with me but when I leave, more than a hundered are here for me. Thanks to all."
Shiva anna, Guru Ragavan anna, Aman sir, Kiran sir, Mayank sir and all of our favourite seniors also left for their places. Today was a very touching day and a day which will remain in our minds forever. We can just hope all our favourite seniors will return to the college some day and spend some time with all of us.

In a nutshell ...

I know its been pretty long. But, here we are again.
So quite a lot has happened in SASTRA in the last couple of months. For starters:

  1. DAKSH was big this year. 684 people from other colleges availed hospitality (which is a big thing!). Participation was huge so was the whole experience. Check www.sastra.edu for more details. I heard that a magazine is also being rolled out, try to book your copy, it may disappear like the t-shirts and jerseys.

  2. KS (KurakSASTRA) had amazing nights. The whole of SASTRA anticipating music and masti each night. The open stage rocked and we rocked with it. Vaidi sir deserves a very big thanks (it was his 'dream project').

  3. The 'SASTRA fotoHub' rolled out amazing videos. Presented us with a special video dedicated to all final year students, called 'Reflexions'.

  4. 'Venspire' was organized by Biotikos. Saw huge participation and a lot of zeal, amazing speakers.

  5. All the associations are in the process of planning out their valedictory functions. This coming week must be busy with activity.

PS: I'm scouting for contributors.
